Located in a central neighbourhood of Hilversum, characterised by its brick architecture and Amsterdam School influences, this private residence has been transformed into a contemporary family home that responds to the evolving needs of its inhabitants.

The clients, a young family with two children, purchased the house to create a long-term home that could accommodate both family life and their professional activities. In addition to living spaces, the house needed to integrate a home office, a massage room, and a generous entrance area suitable for welcoming clients.

Over time, the existing house had undergone several alterations, resulting in a fragmented internal organisation and inefficient connections between spaces. One of the main challenges was the loss of the original entrance sequence, which had been blocked and replaced by an access route through a dark rear alley. The renovation re-establishes the main entrance as the central address of the house and restores a clearer relationship between the home and the street.

A new staircase positioned at the heart of the house becomes the organising element of the project, improving circulation and reconnecting all levels. The internal layout was carefully reconsidered through an in-depth study of the living areas, bedrooms, and bathrooms, creating a more balanced distribution of spaces and ensuring both openness and privacy for the family's daily life.

Alongside the spatial transformation, the project includes a comprehensive upgrade of the building’s sustainability performance. Existing technical installations were renewed, and the windows were replaced to improve energy efficiency, comfort, and the long-term durability of the house.

The result is a renewed residence that respects the character of Hilversum’s architectural heritage while providing a flexible and contemporary environment for family life and work.
